Fathers4Justice calls for all sexist abuse, including misandry, to be classed as a hate crime
Campaign group Fathers4Justice (F4J) today called for all sexist abuse, including misandry, to be classed as a hate crime.
Speaking to The Herald in Scotland and Scottish Legal News, F4J founder Matt O’Connor said calls by the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Jo Swinson MP, to make misogyny a hate crime risks stereotyping men as perpetrators and women as victims when in fact 40% of domestic violence victims are male (British Crime Survey 2011/12).
The group say misandry, the hatred of men, should also be classed as a hate crime.
They point out that women regularly objectify and exploit men on hen nights and at weekends in pubs and clubs, and that men are often exploited in the media and in advertising. F4J say institutional anti-male discrimination is also endemic in the family courts where 97% of residences are given to mothers.
F4J founder Matt O’Connor said: “We must be clear to state that abuse has no gender and that men and women can both be victims and perpetrators of abuse.
“Men are very reluctant too report any kind of abuse because of the stigmas and shame attached to male victims and the absence of male support services.”
“We must make sure all victims of abuse have a voice irrespective of gender.”
